Our Brief History

  1. Pre-1978

    Carried by memory

    Verse circulated orally, passed down sina-ba-sina. A handful of specimens reach us with no reliable attribution — the Academy later published some under names that cannot be confirmed.

  2. 1978

    The Pahari desk opens

    The state Cultural Academy opened a Pahari department. Poets and writers picked up the pen in earnest, and the ghazal became a serious form in the language.

  3. 2010

    Pahiras

    Mir Ghulam Haider Nadeem's collection is published by the J&K Consultative Board, Srinagar — a landmark for the written Pahari ghazal.

  4. 2013

    Shirazah, Ghazal Number

    The J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages devotes an issue to the ghazal, anthologising work that had until then existed only in scattered manuscripts.

  5. 2025

    A new generation prints

    Sajri Parchol and Bol Faqira appear from Print Paradise, Tangdhar — local publishing, in Karnah, for the first time at scale.

  6. 2026

    The archive goes online

    PahariLiterature.com is founded to gather the scattered record in one searchable place, and to give living writers somewhere to publish.
